EDITORIAL ASSISTANT (Ref:F1R/EA)

F1000Research, a unique open science publishing platform from Faculty of 1000, requires an Editorial Assistant to work on the prestigious F1000 Faculty Reviews (http://f1000research.com/channels/f1000-faculty-reviews)

The role is based in central London and involves contacting internationally renowned biological and medical researchers and clinicians by email and by phone to commission new authors for the online publication. The role also involves proof-reading and copyediting editorial content associated with the review articles. The successful candidate will be a life sciences/biomedical graduate with a natural ability to communicate concepts clearly and enthusiastically. They should also be organised, possess excellent oral and written communication skills, show a high level of accuracy and demonstrate an ability to multi-task and effectively prioritise tasks. Prior editorial experience is not required for this role as full training will be provided.

Main Duties:
  • Contact Section Heads to approve ideas and new faculty members as authors for the review service.
  • Recruit senior scientists to author for the service by phone and email.
  • Chase authors by phone and email to obtain their manuscripts in a timely manner.
  • Manage the refereeing process of articles in a timely fashion.
  • Manage referee reports, liaising with authors, referees, and internal staff where clarification is required.
  • Respond to questions from authors and referees relating to the processing of articles.
  • Prepare articles to specification for typesetting and editing.
  • Copy edit and publish short recommendations for the F1000Prime website.
  • Liaise closely with the rest of the team to ensure problems with manuscripts are kept to a minimum.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANT (REF: F1R/PA)

F1000Research, part of F1000 Research Ltd, is a far-reaching alternative Open Access journal in biology and medicine from the founders of BioMed Central. It is redefining scientific publishing through rapid publication, transparent invited peer review post-publication, required sharing and publication of all underlying data, and the publishing of all good science (including negative/null findings, small findings etc).

We are seeking a Production Assistant to manage the article production process from the accepted author manuscript through to the final article, where it is published in a variety of formats. The role will involve proofing and some editing of XML and images, and monitoring third-party suppliers for speed and quality. It will also involve working closely with authors to ensure the production process is fast, accurate and professional, and working closely with the editorial teams to ensure a smooth process throughout for the authors.

You will need a degree or equivalent, be very detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills (both oral and written), and have an interest in publishing. The successful individual will be highly organised and deadline-driven, be customer service-oriented and enjoy interacting with people. You need to be highly computer literate and be able to pick up new software skills quickly, although previous knowledge of XML is not necessary. A science background would be an advantage, but not a necessity.

Main Duties:
  • Manage a proportion of the journal’s articles through the production process from accepted author manuscript through to published article in a variety of publication formats.
  • Work closely with third-party suppliers to monitor speed and quality of output and provide regular feedback to the Production Manager and the supplier as appropriate.
  • Work closely with authors to ensure the production process is fast, accurate and professional, keeping them informed about the status of the publication of their article, and answering queries by e-mail and phone.
  • Monitor image file quality and conduct basic figure manipulations when necessary.
  • Close team work, especially with the Managing Editor and the editorial teams to ensure a smooth transfer of articles between teams.
  • Suggest improvements to the editorial management tools, working with development on the specs and testing new tools to be used by Production.

F1000Prime, the award-winning literature recommendation service for the Medical and Life Sciences communities, is looking for a Commissioning Editor to liaise with top-level research scientists, medics and clinicians.

The role will be based in our central London offices and will involve engaging internationally renowned life-scientists, medical researchers and clinicians by email and telephone to commission new content for the service. The successful candidate will be of at least graduate level, ideally in a life-sciences/biomedical field, and will have a natural ability to communicate concepts clearly and enthusiastically. They should be an organised self-starter, possess excellent oral and written communication skills, show a high level of accuracy in their work and demonstrate an ability to multi-task and effectively prioritise their work on an independent basis. Experience of scientific research and/or scientific publishing is highly desirable but candidates with other relevant experience in which strong interpersonal skills are essential will also be considered.

Main Duties:
  • Take responsibility for running the authorship of one or more of the subject areas covered by F1000Prime.
  • Agree submission schedules with world-renowned scientists and clinicians by phone and email.
  • Respond to questions our authors may have regarding F1000Prime and the submission process in a clear and concise manner.
  • Liaise closely with the rest of the F1000Prime team to resolve any issues authors may have and to keep such instances to a minimum.
