The Bummit guide to hitch-hiking

Adventurous students wore their Neurocare scarves with pride as they set off on a 240-mile charity hitchhike.
More than 180 students from the University of Sheffield thumbed a ride from Sheffield to Glasgow on a budget of just £10 for the Baby Bummit challenge.
The event, organised by the Raising and Giving (RAG) Student Union fundraising body, also helped raise awareness of Sheffield-based charity Neurocare with each student wearing a Neurocare purple and lime scarf during the trip.
Madeleine Whitehead, chairwoman of Bummit, said: “It was a great way to raise awareness for Neurocare. Most of the Bummit teams reached Glasgow by 12.30pm with the last one coming in at 2.30pm. We had a £10 budget but most people did it on £5 or less.”
Emma Douglas, fundraiser for Neurocare, added: “The RAG team helped raise awareness of Neurocare in a really unique and exciting way as well as donating £180 to the charity for their scarves”.
Neurocare funds vital life-saving equipment, facilities and nurse training at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, helping patients with brain injuries and a wide range of conditions including tumours, strokes, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and serious sleep disorders.
The charity is currently running Neurocare November, a month-long awareness and fundraising campaign encouraging businesses, schools, students and individuals to take part in purple and green-themed events.
It is selling 5,000 of its purple and green scarves; each one with with a unique code which can be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win £500.
