Wisewood school demolition begins
Date: 06/01/2012. Story submitted by: Lucy Ashton
The former Wisewood secondary school is to be demolished next week but it will take three months before it is completely flattened.
The school closed after it was merged with Myers Grove and the new Forge Valley school opened at Stannington last September.
The demolition of the school buildings will start on Monday and it's due to be completed by the end of March, weather permitting.
Maggie Birt, community sport manager at Wisewood Sports Centre which is still on the site, said: "Although there will be some temporary changes over this period, we have been informed that car parking will be maintained on the site.
"I would ask everyone to bear with us over this period and comply to any temporary signage by parking responsibly."
The sports centre is currently awaiting the result of planning permission for a new artificial grass pitch which is scheduled to be constructed after the demolition.
Maggie said: "We are hopeful this will be completed and in full operation by the start of the new football season in September.
"We have joined up with two junior football clubs from the Wisewood area who will be using the new facilities to develop and offer new activity to young people in this community.
"The pitch will also be available for bookings and we will announce details as the project develops.
"Plans will be displayed in the Sports Centre as soon as the planning permission results are received in mid to late January."
