A Crosspool woman has celebrated her 50th birthday by opening her own traditional tea rooms.
Paula Stacey, of Manchester Road, turned 50 in February and, after suffering from health problems her whole life, finally decided to make her dream of running her own small business a reality.
The Lounge @ Crosspool opened on Tuesday at the former Craft Angels store on Sandygate Road.
Paula said: “I’ve had health issues all my life and when I turned 50 I thought I need to start thinking about myself – this is my time now.
“I Googled ‘tea rooms for sale in S10’ and this came up. I came in as I knew the former owner, Julia Connelly. She said it had only been on sale for a day but I took it and that was it.”
Before starting her business, Paula, who lives with her husband, Peter, 55, worked as a liaison officer for vulnerable children in the community. But said that although she loved her job, after being in and out of hospital her whole life she is glad she’s finally done something for herself.
She said: “I was in a really bad accident as an eight-year-old. I was hospitalised for a year as I’d smashed my hips up really badly. All my life I’ve been in and out of hospital. I’ve had both hips replaced and one has had to be redone four times.
“I’ve lived in Crosspool for 27 years so I know the area very well and my children have been to school here. It’s the perfect place.”
For the first week only, Paula is selling all hot drinks for £1. Homemade cakes and scones are also available and she welcomes mums and tots, community groups and school children.
The shop is open Tuesday-Friday 8.30am-4pm; Saturdays 8.30am-1pm; closed on Mondays.
