Water buffalo producers take on Sheffield food scene

South Yorkshire’s only producer of water buffalo meat is emerging on the Sheffield food scene to promote their healthy alternative to beef.

Catherine and Stephen Battye, who have been conventional farmers all their lives, run the successful Snowden Hill Buffalo Farm from their home in Oxspring, Penistone.

Catherine said: “It’s going really well, we’re the only ones in South Yorkshire who produce the buffalo meat and it’s proving really popular.”

The animals, originally from Romania, are reared in the grassy Penistone paddocks and fed on a diet of hay, straw, a blend of GM free cereals or grass from clover rich pastures.

With help from son Eddy, a gym instructor at English Institute of Sport, the family of farmers are now taking on markets across Yorkshire, including Sheffield’s night market last month and offering visitors a tasty, protein rich burger.

Catherine said: “We sent our burgers off to a public analyst to be tested and the results proved they contained less than 3.0/100 grams of fat. They are also a great source of Omega 3.”

“We love having stalls at the markets, they’re very sociable and we get chatting to lots of people.”

Visitors to Sheffield Night Market, held on Barkers Pool, flocked to the stall to try out the meat.

Student, Christopher Markland said: “I’ve never tried it before but I’d definitely eat it again. “

Stephen Battye said: “What we have found is people like something different and when they taste buffalo they like it.”
