This week saw the first meeting of the new Sutton Heath Parish Council at the Barnsdale Community Centre following its successful efforts last month of filling its nine vacant councillor seats.
Michael De May was elected by his fellow councillors as the parish’s first Chairman of the Council and was presented by Suffolk Coastal’s Hilary Slater with the official document that authorised the setting up of the district’s new parish council.
“The go-ahead was given in January by Suffolk Coastal District Council to a new parish council serving the residents of Sutton Heath coming into force at the start of April,” said Hilary Slater, Suffolk Coastal and Waveney’s head of legal and democratic services.
“There was a strong groundswell of local opinion that the existing parish of Sutton needed to be split into two, so that those living in Sutton Heath with their own specific local needs could have a more relevant local parish council.
“The district council received a petition a year ago asking for a new parish to be created, and after the formal review and consultation, it was found there was enough support for the new one to be given the go-ahead in January,” added Mrs Slater.
In March, the call for candidates to come forward for the parish council attracted nine people by the deadline, meaning that all were elected to serve there area until 2015.
