The University of Sheffield has appointed the UK's first ever professor of the Public Understanding of Philosophy, as it seeks to make one of academia's most esoteric subjects more accessible.
Dr Angie Hobbs, a Philosphy professor at the University of Warwick, will take up the new position in September.
She has been hailed broadcaster Melvyn Bragg as "extraordinary".
Sheffield vice-chancellor Keith Burnett said: "This appointment reflects our belief that the thinking which takes place in universities can and should reach out beyond the academic realm and make a difference in the wider world."
