Hillsborough Leisure Centre is bucking the national trend for participation levels among girls taking part in sport.
SIV, which manages venues across the city including Hillsborough Leisure Centre, has seen an increase in the number of girls participating in coached activities.
Between May 2011 and April 2012, nearly 154,000 girls up to the age of 19 took part in coached activities or accessed sporting activities through SIV's lifeCARD. In the same period in 2009 and 2010, this figure stood at 90,282.
The news comes as results of a recent report by the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) showed that school PE lessons are putting girls off sport. The organisation believes it is vital that schools are encouraging youngsters to be more active and that girls in the UK are not getting enough exercise.
SIV provides a range of coached sports for children and young people across its venues, including swimming, diving, trampolining and basketball.
Lorenzo Clark, operations director at SIV, said: "These latest figures from the WSFF highlight the importance of engaging young people, particularly girls, in sports for all abilities and allowing them to take part in activities that they have a genuine interest in.
"The health and fitness of our young people is vital and at SIV we have a commitment to encourage young people to participate in sport and therefore provide an excellent range of activities to give them as wide a choice as possible."
