Nursing in East Suffolk is being celebrated on International Nurses Day 2012 this Saturday 12 May.
A photographic exhibition is being staged at The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust and nurses of the past, present and future are being invited to come and see photographs of nursing in Ipswich through the decades.
The exhibition is being held on the same day as members of the East Suffolk Nurses League celebrate their profession with a service, lunch and annual meeting at the hospital.
Cath Gorman, Associate Director of Nursing at The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust said: "International Nurses Day this year brings together the Florence Nightingale Foundation and NHS Careers and the theme is putting pride back into nursing.
"We came up with the idea of putting together a picture of how nursing has developed through the decades at this hospital and how proud we can be of progression.
"Thanks to the hard work of Gary Wynne our hospital librarian and the members of the East Suffolk Nurses League we have got a fantastic range of photographs and other memorabilia, a real trip down memory lane for all of us."
The exhibition will open at 2.30pm on Friday 11 May 2012 in the Main Lecture Theatre, Postgraduate Education Centre, The Ipswich Hospital, Heath Road, Ipswich, to give anyone interested in nursing the opportunity to visit it and talk to nurses about how worthwhile and fulfilling a career in nursing can be.
Another strong theme of this year’s celebration is promoting nursing to young people and shattering misconceptions about what is involved.
“I only ever wanted to be a nurse”, explained Catherine Morgan, Associate Director of Nursing at The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust.
“It is a great profession and one that it is really rewarding. You go home each day and think, I did something real today.
"Nurses at Ipswich do spend time going out to schools and colleges inspiring young people to choose nursing as a career and we welcome any young people who are thinking about nursing to come and meet us on Friday.”
