An 'Easy Going Trails' pack has been specially designed by Suffolk County Council and disability groups to encourage people with limited mobility to enjoy and explore Suffolk’s beautiful countryside.
The pack features 18 walks which take in the full depth and variety of Suffolk’s countryside from the Heritage Coast to inspiring Constable Country and the wilds of the Brecks.
It was launched today at Thornham Walks in Mid Suffolk, with participants enjoying a short walk at the Thornham estate’s beautiful walled garden – just one of the outstanding walks featured in the pack.
Councillor Guy McGregor, Suffolk County Council's Portfolio Holder for Roads, Transport and Planning said; “The pack is a great way to identify the many accessible walks that are on our doorstep - walks that everyone who lives, works or visits Suffolk can enjoy.
"It has been created as a result of a close partnership between the county council and our partners, and I am so pleased that the pack represents such a positive and useful guide for all families and especially those with disabilities. For my part I am determined this year to do more walking in our wonderful county.”
Linda Hoggarth MBE, former chairman and member of disability charity Optua, who has been closely involved with the project, said; “I’ve enjoyed helping to test out some of these walks as I love the Suffolk countryside and it’s shown me some places that I didn’t know I could access.
"I hope that other disabled people and people with limited mobility will benefit from these walks as it shows there are some very enjoyable and accessible walks across the county. With summer just round the corner it’s an ideal time to launch this new pack.”
The pack has been created in partnership between Suffolk County Council, Optua, Stepping Out in Suffolk Healthy Walks, the Access Group for Suffolk and Healthy Ambitions Suffolk.
A copy of the pack can be downloaded at www.discoversuffolk.org.uk or by contacting any of the county’s tourist information centres.
