Endcliffe ACS in double yellow lines row
Date: 11/05/2012. Story submitted by: Rachel L Gerrish
Students, visitors and local residents are furious after double yellow lines have been placed to prevent cars being parked outside the student village entrance on Red Lane – but reduced rates will not be offered for official car parking.
Parking is already a contentious issue in Endcliffe, with students either expected to pay £75 for a parking permit, or find a space on a nearby road, often taking a local resident's parking space.
The area on Red Lane previously had enough space to park up to six cars - now hosting only two.
Beverly, Endcliffe Accommodation Services (ACS) representative, said: “If there's an ambulance or fire engine, they wouldn't be able to get through with cars parked on either side. A reduced rate won't be available on the car parking permit, but there is a pay and display car park charging £2 a day near the Edge.”
But many students aren't satisfied with this response.
Carl Jenkins lives in Endcliffe Student Village, and is studying Aerospace Engineering. He bought a parking permit at the beginning of the academic year.
He said: "It's ridiculous, to be honest. It's not fair that people without a permit should have to pay the full £75 permit fee so late into the academic year, when they've been left with no alternative. It should be proportionate."
Julia Clark does not have a parking permit, and is outraged at the decision:
"Why would we pay £75 to park our cars when exams finish in a month and we'll all be moving out? Emergency services access never seemed to be a problem before, so why now?”
