A Sheffield health expert has been appointed to a prestigious role that will help shape the future training of doctors.

Dr Peter Bowie, a consultant with Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC), has been selected as the new chief examiner at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych).

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the main professional and educational organisation of psychiatrists in the UK. It is responsible for representing psychiatrists, psychiatric research and providing public information about mental health problems as well as advising those responsible for training and certifying psychiatrists in the UK.

The chief examiner is responsible for overseeing the development and administration of all aspects of the examinations.

Dr Bowie said: “Being chief examiner is the ultimate chance to influence the standard for training in my profession, which is a fantastic opportunity.”

Kevan Taylor, SHSC’s chief executive, added: “This is a very prestigious and important post and it is a real honour for a Sheffield consultant and clinical director to be appointed to it.”

Dr Bowie, 54, joined the Trust in 2004 and has been involved in the examination process since the early 90s when he started as a college examiner. In 2008 he was then appointed lead for the clinical examination at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

He will now hold the chief examiner post for five years.
