Meadowhall Shopping Centre has scooped two top national marketing awards at a ceremony hosted by rugby player and Strictly Come Dancing star Austin Healey.
The centre picked up a Purple Apple award in the public and media relations category for its Toy Tester initiative, which saw an 11-year-old selected as Meadowhall’s ‘chief toy tester’ during summer 2011.
The campaign captured the imagination of both children and parents, and it generated more than 80 pieces of press coverage including national exposure on breakfast show Daybreak.
Meadowhall also achieved a merit in the event category for the 2011 Christmas lights switch-on, which brought together Tinchy Stryder, Matt Cardle and Cover Drive among other acts to create an open air concert which was attended by over 10,000 people.
Meadowhall director Darren Pearce said: "It's a huge honour and testament to the Meadowhall team that we have picked up not one, but two Purple Apple awards at this year's ceremony. Retail is a fast evolving business, and marketing needs to constantly respond to that. We are proud to be recognised as a Centre that introduces innovative, creative ideas, which are well executed and achieve tangible results."
The British Council of Shopping Centres Purple Apple marketing awards are the only awards which recognise and reward effective shopping and town centre marketing within the UK retail centre sector.
