The circus came to town this week to celebrate a new initiative set up to promote creative, social and entrepreneurial spirit in Sheffield.
Representatives from Sheffield City Council, the media, Sheffield Theatres, bars, clubs and the city’s creative businesses and organisations were invited to a Victorian Circus Party, hosted by Social Sheffield.
The event, held at the Mercure Hotel and the Peace Gardens, saw guests in Victorian fancy dress mingle with circus performers.
Louise Cwiklinski, of Social Sheffield, said the event aimed to promote Social Sheffield’s new monthly magazine and to inspire everyone in the city to become more sociable and creative.
She said: “Social Sheffield was set up by Michael Biggs, who is also the creative director of the magazine. We’ve labelled Social Sheffield a ‘movement’ to ensure it’s as interactive and all-inclusive as possible.
“The party’s Victorian circus theme is based on the first edition of the magazine, which is due out in early June and includes everything from interviews with local bar managers and dj’s to a review of the best cafes in Sheffield.
“The event has been a great opportunity to network and hopefully we have inspired and encouraged more people to collaborate with us in future.”
Alice Jowett, editor of the Social Sheffield magazine, added: “Sheffield has a great circus and performing arts culture, promoted particular through arts education charity Green Top Circus, who feature in the first edition of the magazine. They also gave us the idea for the theme of our event.
“There are so many things being created in Sheffield, which we hope to champion through Social Sheffield. “
