Almost 1,000 pupils from schools across the region will be going for gold at the South Yorkshire School Games inaugural summer finals/

They take place at Abbeydale Sports centre between 10:30am – 3pm on Monday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 3.

The summer finals, with over 100 teams contesting a variety of sports, are the culmination of local competitions within and between schools in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Diane McKinlay, Chair of the Local Organising Committee of the South Yorkshire School Games, said: “I am very much looking forward to seeing all the pupils excel in their sports and enjoy the music and dance performances which make up the cultural aspect of the South Yorkshire School Games. It should be a great couple of days.

“Sport makes a massive contribution to the vibrancy of South Yorkshire.

"As we are all gearing up for the London 2012 Games, the South Yorkshire School Games will be a lasting legacy for school sport in our region hopefully for years to come.”
