An innovative scheme is helping green-thinking students to recycle more unwanted household items than ever before.

Bring It, Don't Bin It, was initially launched by the University of Sheffield in partnership with Accommodation and Commercial Services and the Students' Union to encourage those in university residences to recycle - rather than throw away unwanted things when moving house for the new academic year.

This year the scheme has grown bigger than ever and now includes more areas throughout the city which are densely populated with students.
Over the past four years tonnes of reusable household goods such as pots and pans, furniture and clothes, have been rescued and recycled rather than thrown away.

These have been donated to local charities and many items were passed straight on to vulnerable people in desperate need of a helping hand.

Tim Allen, communications Officer from the University's Energy and Environment Team, said: "The fact that Bring It Don't Bin It has grown every year shows what a huge success it's been.

"The scheme has now expanded to street collections, for students in private houses, for the first time this year.

"The trial has been small-scale, but we're aiming to have an even bigger impact and eventually to reach all of our students across Sheffield.

"As well as the environmental benefits of reusing perfectly good items instead of binning them, this expansion helps the local community too.

"We now have at least six local charities benefitting from pots, pans, duvets, food and clothes.

"Some, like St Vincents' Furniture Store, St Wilfrids and Jubilee Foodbank, pass the items straight on to vulnerable people, while others like St Luke’s Hospice, Shelter and The Conservation Volunteers use the items to raise funds for good causes.

"It's a deeply rewarding scheme to be involved in and I hope it continues to go from strength to strength."
