Junior members of Barnsley Judo Club had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to train with a champion during a special day-out in London.
The club used a grant of £2,000 to take its junior section to Newham, the principal host borough of London 2012, for a ‘train with a champion’ event hosted by the British Judo Association.
The grant was from the Newham-Barnsley Partnership aspiration and achievement fund.
A number of Newham-based judo clubs, many with a long-established and rich judo heritage, were at the event.
The day was led by Nicole Nunn, who showed the youngsters and coaches how to combine two modules, Gymnastics for Judo, and Judo Fit, into a training session for all abilities.
There were more than 50 youngsters on the mat from Barnsley and local clubs in the Newham area and guest coaches included Jerome Robinson Read and Boris Kirbrik who gave demonstrations and answered questions.
Eddie Newton, head coach at the Barnsley club, said: “Our juniors will remember this day for the rest of their lives.
"It was a great day and, marvellous to meet all the head coaches from other clubs and exchange ideas on how to develop our sport in these challenging times.”
