Flood warning as River Don bursts banks

We are receiving reports that the River Don near Winn Gardens has burst its banks and there is an emergency sand-bagging operation underway to prevent flooding to homes.
The Environment Agency has issued a flood warnng for the Wadsley Bridge and Winn Gardens area.
This means that flooding is expected and that immediate action is required.
In the floods of 2007, 200 Winn Gardens residents had to be evacuated to nearby schools as the Don burst its banks and flooded homes.
The Environment Agency says: "There has been an intense band of rainfall over the area today, which will continue into this evening. Rainfall total of 20 milimetres are expected. The rivers are now responding to this rainfall."

UPDATE 2300hrs. Local Hillsborough councillor Bob Johnson has been on the ground at Winn Gardens and reports that "fortunately no homes were flooded and no evacuation was needed".
He said that residents showed "great community spirit today" as precautionary sand bags were deployed.
UPDATE 0947hrs. The flood warning issued for the Wadsley Bridge and Winn Gardens area is no longer in force.
However the Environment Agency have said "River levels have started to fall. A further band of showers is forecast to cross the area this afternoon and early evening. Some of these showers could be heavy and it is possible that some river levels could start to rise again."
