A new pole dancing venture in Castle Market is turning out to be a ‘pole’ new adventure for a local fitness enthusiast.

The private studio, A Pole New Adventure, is owned by Gemma Hopkins and is situated on the ground floor of Castle Market, on Waingate.

Gemma said: “I’ve been pole dancing since 2007 and set up the business in March this year.

"I’m an approved pole dance instructor and since March I’ve taught over 100 people.

“Pole dancing is great exercise, it works every muscle in the body – for most of my students, they try it out because it’s something they’ve never tried before.”

Although pole dancing is commonly associated with strip clubs, huge efforts have been made by the fitness industry to promote it as a legitimate form of dance and acrobatics.

Gemma advocates and supports pole dancing as a performing art and recognises it as a tough aerobic and anaerobic workout.

Keen to promote the benefits of pole dancing to the Sheffield public, Gemma and some of her students even set up a pole in the Peace Gardens this week to demonstrate the performing art.

Gemma said: “Pole dancing is what you make it – it’s for all shapes and sizes, from young to old, men and women – my oldest student is 61!

“I am very keen to encourage students to push themselves and gain strength in their pole dancing.”

Hourly classes in the private studio at Castle Market start at 9.30am and finish at 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

A half hour taster session costs £4 and a full hour group session costs £7 (£5 NUS). One-on-one sessions and discounts for block bookings are available.
