Heat’s on for firefighters in charity challenge

Seven female firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue are hoping to complete the challenge of running two charity races wearing full fire kit and breathing apparatus.
The group ran Sheffield’s Race for Life kitted out in full gear last month in Doncaster, and are bidding to repeat the feat on Sunday, in Sheffield, all in aid of Cancer Research UK.
The seven fundraising firefighters are Angie Thorp (Dearne), Jade Styan (Cudworth), Fleur Doyle (Dearne), Sally Stark (Dearne), Sarah McCarthy (Aston Park), Sian Nortcliffe (Edlington) and Franca Salerno (Maltby).
Firefighter Angie Thorp, who represented Great Britain at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, said: “It might sound strange but competing in the 100 metre hurdles at the Olympics was much easier than running 5k wearing 20 kilos of fire kit!
“It wasn’t so much the weight that was difficult to cope with, it was more the heat, but we all got round ok. We’ve actually been training in the gym on treadmills wearing our fire kit so I think that helped.
“This is for a fantastic cause and we’re thankful to SYFR for allowing us to do the races in our BA kit, and to Jade for her part in organising our involvement. We’re raring to go for Sunday and hopefully we can reach our fundraising target!"
The team have already raised £800 towards their £1,000 target, and you can still sponsor them. Just visit the link below.
