A huge construction project to transform the University of Sheffield's Students' Union begins today (Mon July 23).
According to the University, the £20 million refurbishment will see the Union transformed into "a world class facility for students, staff and the community."
Work has begun today on University House, which was one of the first glass curtain walled buildings in the world when it was completed in 1963, to integrate it with the Students' Union.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett and the Union Sabbatical Officers, donned their hard hats and high visibility jackets and dug their spades symbolically into the soil to mark the start of the ongoing project.
The building is due to be completed by September 2013.
