A new housing estate on the Wybourn has moved a step closer to being reality after cabinet members agreed to hand over a plot of land off Cricket Inn Road to the Great Places Housing Group.

A mixture of 25 apartments and bungalows will be built on the site for affordable rent, which is 80 per cent of the market rent that could be achieved from the property.

Great Places already owns and manages a number of social properties in the area.

At Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, leader of the council Julie Dore said: “I’m so pleased to be seeing anything that regenerates the area. I spent my early years there.

“It has had its challenges and will continue to do so but anything to regenerate a well-loved area is good. We all want to do what’s right for the Wybourn.”

Coun Harry Harpham, deputy council leader, added: “I welcome this, particularly (the link) with Great Places, because they’re the community landlord of choice and they have a long term interest in the area. They’ve proven they want to stick with Sheffield and they’re committed to providing good housing.

“(The development) will use local labour and local suppliers to help us sustain the local economy around there and it will eventually feed into the wider economy as well. All in all, it’s a win, win situation from what was a very difficult situation.”
