A signed jersey from Sheffield’s Olympics golden girl Jess Ennis was the star lot at an auction to raise money for two of Sheffield’s biggest children’s charities.
The jersey was sold to a private bidder for £500, bringing the total amount raised by Mercury Taxis for The Children’s Hospital Charity and Whirlow Hall Farm Trust to nearly £5,000.
The auction was held during the Crookes-based taxi firm’s annual charity golf day, which was held at the Dore and Totley Golf Club.
Teams from many local businesses entered the competition and the tournament was eventually won by a foursome from Napoleons Casino and Restaurant on Ecclesall Road.
The victorious venue also hosted the presentation evening, which saw Owls legend David Hirst play MC for the firm’s raffle and auction.
A total of £4792.39 was raised over the day – and the firm is already organising a sky dive next month which will see 20 staff, friends, family members and colleagues leap from the skies.
Mercury’s manager Ian Godbehere said: “We’d just like to thank everyone who gave their time and money towards a great event – both the golfing itself and the presentation evening afterwards. The golf was hotly contested, and we had some great items to auction off which were kindly donated by various people.
“The amount raised exceeded our expectations, and it just goes to show what a generous bunch Sheffielders are.
“We can’t wait for the skydive now - although it will probably be a bit more nerve-racking than teeing off on the 9th!”
