Crowds celebrating Jamaica Day in Barker's PoolSubmitted by: Kevin Meagher
Jamaica Day was celebrated in fine style in the centre of Sheffield today.
Hundreds gathered to celebrate the annual national day of the Caribbean island, which this year is celebrating its fiftieth year of independence.
The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun John Campbell, joined wellwishers in Barker’s Pool as poems were recited and traditional songs sung before a letter from Jamaica's High Commissioner to Britain Aloun Ndombet-Assamba was read aloud by event organisers.
Although Jamaica’s population is only around 3 million, there are an estimated 800,000 people of Jamaican heritage living in Britain. Sheffield’s Caribbean community is thought to number around 10,000 - with many coming from Jamaica.
The celebrations continued at the SADACCA Afro-Caribbean Community Centre at the Wicker.
