On your marks for Big Running Weekend

As the first festival of running draws near organisers are all set for inaugural event.

The Big Running Weekend is a joint effort from the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust and running experts at the Sheffield-based store Accelerate.

The weekend-long festival of running will take place over the August Bank Holiday and features something for all from a children’s farm themed fun run right through to the 56.5 mile New Balance Ultra Tour of the Peak District.

Other races to get involved with over the weekend include a junior race, 10K and an aptly named 12.12 mile trail race.

South Yorkshire Orienteers will also be setting out some course for all age ranges.

To add to the festival atmosphere there will be running talks on the night of Saturday, August 25 when you can hear from the pros and camping will be available.

Runners who raise sponsorship will be supporting the work of the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust. One participant in the Whirlow 10K knows just how important that is, having visited the classroom in the countryside during his school years.

Jason Ward, a previous winner of the Sheffield Half Marathon said: “I remember coming to the farm as a kid, helping the farmer with his jobs, seeing a chicken lay an egg and learning about what farm animals and crops ended up on our plates.

"But my overriding memory is of the lane, the same lane that I will be starting the 10K race on in a few week’s time.”

Organisers are please with the uptake in the event’s first year, but there’s still time to get involved.

Lisa Clowes from the Trust said: “There’s still space for more entries if you’re feeling inspired to get out there after our Golden Girl’s Olympic performance.

"We’re guaranteeing future race entries for those who run this year.”

The Big Running Weekend will take place across the August Bank Holiday Weekend, Saturday, August 25 to Monday, August 27.
