People from Barnsley are being invited to celebrate the success of Yorkshire’s athletes during a special event in New Lodge to mark the Olympic Closing Ceremony on Sunday.

To mark the end of one of the most successful Olympic Games in history, members of the public are being invited to New Lodge Community Centre to watch the closing ceremony live on a big screen.

Barnsley is the only place in the country where a mobile screen toured local communities during the Olympic and Paralympic Games bringing the sporting world’s greatest festival to life for local people.

The screen’s journey through the town will end on Sunday at the event, which will see activities and entertainment held from 11am, culminating in the closing ceremony which begins at 7pm.

Oliver Coppard, Newham Barnsley Partnership manager, said: “We wanted to give the people of Barnsley the chance to celebrate in an event that will bring people together and create a fitting end to what has been a brilliant two weeks of sport and entertainment.”

During the Olympics, the screen has visited around 60 locations throughout Barnsley, starting with a ticket-only event in Mandela Gardens where people will be able to enjoy the spectacular
