Dancing ‘like nobody’s watching’

Organisers of a city centre dance event encouraged everyone in Sheffield to come and show their moves and ‘dance like nobody’s watching'.
Now in its second year, ‘imove on the street’ aimed to bring a party atmosphere to the city.
Acclaimed dance companies Ponydance, So and So Circus Theatre, Rationale and Beth Cassani performed hip hop battles, comedic dance routines and acrobatics at the event.
Beth dressed as a magical bear and led spectators from the train station to the Peace Gardens and Ponydance performed a routine about four people on a night out at The Harley. City centre shoppers and visitors were also treated to two mesmerising performers dancing inside an inflatable bubble.
Tessa Gordziejko, creative director of imove, said: “The imove programme invites audiences to stop in the street, dance like nobody’s watching and enjoy fantastic, exhilarating performances that take their inspiration from how people move in the real world.
“It’s been great to bring this event to Sheffield and people have really engaged with it and been really intrigued. I hope it encourages people to enjoy dance and movement. We hope to leave a legacy here in Sheffield and an appetite for dance and hopefully this can grow into something bigger, perhaps a dance festival.”
The same team were involved in the Leaner Faster Stronger show, which explored the limits of what being human means, at The Crucible Theatre in June.
The event was part of the Cultural Olympiad, which aims to create a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
