The Liberal Democrats have announced that a Barnsley businessman is to be their candidate to become South Yorkshire’s first-ever police and crime commissioner this November.
Robert Teal was selected as the Lib Dem candidate in a region-wide ballot of party members.
Mr Teal said he was “immensely proud” to have been selected saying it was “vital that there is a candidate who will fight for local people, rather than just fight the Government.”
He pledged to cut down on waste and beef-up frontline policing. “I want a police force that works for local people not senior officers” he said.
“The Police also need to do more work establishing the trust of certain communities. Without this trust policing by consent is not possible.
“This election will give local people a real say over how their local police force is run so it’s really important that residents take the opportunity to vote” he added.
Cllr Shaffaq Mohammed, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council said he was “delighted” to have Mr. Teal as his candidate.
“He has great experience – as a retailer he understands the effect that crime can have on local businesses. What’s more, as someone with in-depth understanding of our criminal courts, he understands the failings of the current system.”
The election will be held on November 15.
Labour has selected Rotherham councillor Shaun Wright as its candidate. The Conservatives have yet to select theirs.
