A 90-year-old football medal has been stolen during a burglary in Gleadless.
Police were called to a house on Morland Close, where several items had been taken in the burglary, including a 9ct gold football medal from 1920.
This medal was awarded to Ernest Blenkinsop, just before he began his professional football career playing for Sheffield Wednesday FC.
In his 11-year career, Ernest also played for England, winning 26 caps – the Sheffield Wednesday record for most England caps for an outfield player.
The medal, which has a gold and enamel shield on the front, is engraved on the back with the words: ‘Thomas Fattorini, Birmingham. B.A.F.U CHALLENGE CUP RUNNERS UP 1920-21. E. BLENKINSOP’.
The medal holds significant sentimental value to the owner, who is Ernest’s granddaughter. Police believe the person who stole this medal may attempt to sell it on.
The burglary happened at about 11.25am on Wednesday, October 31.
Anyone with any information relating to this incident, or who may have information about the whereabouts of the medal, should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 375 of 31 October.
