Sheffield’s mosques will celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad on Sunday with prayers, speeches and a procession through local streets.
The Madina Masjid is hosting the ‘Milad Un-Nabi’ event and all members of the community are welcome to join the celebrations.
‘Milad Un-Nabi’ falls on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal – a month on the Islamic lunar calendar. As it is a lunar calendar, the date varies by about ten days each year on a Gregorian calendar.
This year it is expected to fall on January 24 but celebrations will take place on Sunday for the convenience of local residents and participants.
Prayers will be held in the mosque at 1pm, followed by the procession. Afterwards, a number of keynote speeches in Urdu and English will be given as well as the serving of Asian food to all visitors.
Waheed Akhtar, from the Sheffield Islamic Centre Madina Masjid Trust, said: "The most important part of Eid Milad Un-Nabi is focusing upon the character of the Prophet Muhammad; on his teachings, sufferings, and how he forgave others. As well as recounting the Prophet's life, salutations and poetry in his praise are recited."
The procession, which begins at 1.30pm, will take in the following route: From the Madina Mosque on Wolseley Rd, participants will walk towards the top where the procession will turn left onto Abbeydale Rd, right onto Chippinghouse Rd, left onto Crescent Rd and on to Empire Rd. From there the procession will turn left onto Abbeydale Rd, right onto Chippinghouse Rd, left onto Gifford Rd and then back across Wolseley Rd into Madina Mosque.
Allowing for a leisurely pace, as there will be elderly people taking part, the procession will take about an hour.
